Let’s make it

  1. Seasoning

In a small bowl, combine salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper (if using). Mix well to create the dry rub.

  2. Preparation

Rub the dry seasoning mixture evenly all over the beef brisket, pressing gently to adhere. Let it rest at room temperature for 15 minutes while preparing the slow cooker.

  3. Preparation

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, sear the brisket on all sides until browned, about 3-4 minutes per side. This step locks in flavors and enhances the crust.

  4. Cooking

Transfer the seared brisket to the slow cooker. Pour beef broth, apple cider vinegar, and barbecue sauce around the brisket, avoiding washing off the seasoning on top.

  5. Cooking

Cover and cook on low heat for 8 to 10 hours until the brisket is tender and easily shredded with a fork. Avoid opening the lid frequently to maintain temperature.

  6. Finishing

Once cooked, carefully remove the brisket from the slow cooker and let it rest on a cutting board for 10 minutes before slicing against the grain.

  7. Serving

Serve slices of brisket drizzled with some of the cooking juices and extra barbecue sauce if desired, accompanied by classic Southern sides.

A little kitchen wisdom

Tips & notes

For best flavor and texture, sear the brisket before slow cooking and let it rest before slicing. Use a meat thermometer to check doneness; brisket is tender when internal temperature reaches about 195°F (90°C). Avoid slicing until rested to retain juices.

Saving it for later

Store leftover brisket in an airtight container in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking. Consume within 3-4 days for best quality. The brisket can also be frozen up to 3 months; thaw overnight in refrigerator before reheating.

Reheating

Reheat brisket slices gently in a covered dish with a splash of beef broth or water in the oven at 325°F (160°C) until warmed through, about 20-25 minutes. Alternatively, reheat in a skillet over medium-low heat to avoid drying out. Avoid microwave reheating to preserve texture.
