Let’s make it
Preparation
Preheat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
Assembly
Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each bread slice.
Assembly
Place one bread slice, buttered side down, on the skillet. Layer evenly with sliced cheddar cheese and apple slices. Sprinkle a little ground black pepper if desired.
Cooking
Top with the second bread slice, buttered side up. Grill for about 3 to 4 minutes until the bread is golden brown and the cheese begins to melt.
Cooking
Carefully flip the sandwich and grill the other side for another 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
Serving
Remove from skillet, let it rest for a minute, then slice in half and serve warm.
Tips & notes
For best results, use a firm apple that holds its shape and offers a tart contrast to the cheddar. Butter the bread evenly to promote crisp, golden grilling.
Saving it for later
Store any leftover uncut sandwich tightly wrapped in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Note that the apple slices may brown and the bread lose crispness.
Reheating
Reheat the sandwich in a skillet over medium heat for 2-3 minutes per side until warmed through and crisp, or use a toaster oven. Avoid microwaving to prevent sogginess.
