One step at a time

Let’s make it

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking dish with butter.

  2. Base

In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, baking powder, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Stir well to distribute the spices evenly.

  3. Fruit

Add the peeled, cored, and diced apple to the dry ingredients and mix to combine.

  4. Wet mixture

In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, maple syrup, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.

  5. Assembly

Pour the wet ingredients over the oat mixture. Stir thoroughly until everything is evenly combined.

  6. Assembly

Pour the oatmeal batter into the prepared baking dish. Spread it out evenly with a spatula.

  7. Cooking

Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the oatmeal is set but still moist.

  8. Serving

Remove from the oven and let cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm, optionally with a drizzle of extra maple syrup or a splash of milk.

Tips & notes

Make sure to use a crisp apple variety like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best texture contrasts. You can add chopped nuts for extra crunch if desired. Leftover baked oatmeal can be sliced and toasted for a quick breakfast.

Saving it for later

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat individual portions in the microwave or toaster oven.

Reheating

Reheat leftovers in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes until warmed through. Alternatively, toast slices in a toaster oven until heated and slightly crisp on edges.
