One step at a time

Let’s make it

  1. Breading

Prepare the breading stations: In one shallow bowl, combine the flour with salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper. In a second bowl, whisk the egg and milk together. In a third bowl, place the cornmeal.

  2. Breading

Season the green tomato slices lightly with salt and black pepper. Then, dredge each tomato slice first in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.

  3. Breading

Dip the floured tomato slices into the egg wash, ensuring they are fully coated.

  4. Breading

Press the tomato slices into the cornmeal mixture, coating evenly on both sides. Set aside on a plate.

  5. Cooking

Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (about 400°F) for 5 minutes. Spray the air fryer basket lightly with vegetable oil spray to prevent sticking.

  6. Cooking

Place the coated tomato slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Lightly spray the tops of the tomatoes with vegetable oil spray. Air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.

  7. Remoulade Sauce

Meanwhile, prepare the spicy remoulade sauce by whisking together mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, lemon juice, paprika, and hot sauce in a small bowl. Adjust seasoning to taste.

  8. Serving

When the green tomatoes are done, transfer to a serving plate and serve immediately with the spicy remoulade sauce for dipping.

A little kitchen wisdom

Tips & notes

For extra crispiness, let the breaded tomato slices rest for 5 minutes before air frying to help the coating set. Use a light spray of oil to ensure even browning without sogginess. Serve immediately for best texture.

Saving it for later

Store leftover fried green tomatoes and remoulade sauce separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator within 2 hours of cooking. Consume within 3 days for best quality. The tomatoes may lose crispness when stored.

Reheating

Reheat fried green tomatoes in a preheated air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for 3-4 minutes until warmed through and crispy again. Avoid microwaving to prevent sogginess. Remoulade sauce should be served cold or at room temperature.
